Stork village Het Liesvelt - Groot-Ammers

N 51.9301485 / E 4.84164

In the 1960s, storks were almost extinct in the Netherlands. In 1969, the Bird Protection Society bought the Het Liesvelt terrain in order to start breeding storks there. After thirty years the goal was achieved: there were more than a thousand storks in the Netherlands!

Stork Village Het Liesvelt was then converted into a regional centre with a catering facility, a shop with regional products, a farmers' playground and a cuddle meadow with rabbits and guinea pigs. On the grounds you will find an apiary, butterfly garden, reed swamp, a duck decoy and a corn mill. Furthermore, you can visit the interactive water exhibition 'How to keep it dry' and the exhibition 'Farm and yard'.

And the storks? They still know how to find the centre! Each spring, the nests are still occupied by pairs of storks, who raise their young independently.
