The secrets of the Grebbe line
Leusden, Woudenberg, Renswoude
The Grebbe line was constructed in the 18th century as a defense line and consists of well-camouflaged parts such as outposts, forts, retaining quays, locks, bunkers, casemates and trenches. By flooding parts of the Gelderse Vallei, the centre and west of the Netherlands was protected against the enemy. In 1939-1940, the line was used for the last time and was called the Valleistelling. Dozens of kilometers with hundreds of years of military history is now hidden in a beautiful green nature reserve. This cycling route takes you along a part of the Grebbe line where you go back in time at various places and can view defenses, often recently restored to former glory.
