Cycling route along the windmills around Haarlem

Haarlem, Heemstede, Bloemendaal
On this stunning cycling route of just under 50 kilometers the windmills are the historical highlights. Around Haarlem you pass no fewer than four windmills, originating in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The windmills served various functions. Molen De Eenhoorn was important in the sawmill industry, and molens De Hommel and De Veer helped drain the nearby polders, while De Zandhaas was used for grinding grain. At the last mill you’ll find a mill shop with artisanal products and a small visitor centre, nice to check out!
The route also takes you through Zuid‑Kennemerland National Park; a beautiful forest and dune area with lovely viewpoints to take a break. An oasis of calm in this densely urbanised part of the province. Herds of wild Konik horses, Shetland ponies, Scottish Highland cattle and European bison (wisenten) graze there. Pause your cycle ride to enjoy the breeze on Bloemendaal beach.
Further you cross the Spaarnwoude recreational area, go past the hamlet Penningsveer and in Haarlem‑Zuid you cycle through the park at Molenplas. Add the historic Duin en Kruidberg Estate where Stadtholder William III used to hunt animals. Start and end your route at the cycling route starting point in the lively, green Burgemeester Reinaldapark.
