Cycle route for the natural tourist

Balkbrug, Dedemsvaart, Nieuwleusen
Start your bicycle route from the village which is also called 'De Balk' in Low Saxon: Balkbrug. The village owes its name to a 'balk' under the 'bridge' lying across the canal the Dedemsvaart. This beam prevented ships with too great a draught from sailing under the bridge. The village is surrounded by beautiful nature, which we do not want to deprive you of. In between the natural woody surroundings, you also come across wonderful gardens, such as the gardens of Mien Ruys in Dedemsvaart.
Mien was one of the most important garden architects of the 20th century. Be inspired and admire the thirty gardens from Mien Ruys' life's work. Tip: you can also sign up for various workshops and packages. Booking in advance is often necessary. Get back on your bike to continue your journey to Witharen. There you will find the famous sculpture garden of over 15,000 m2, with a different exhibition every season. Check the website to see which exhibition is on now.
Continue the cycle route along rural roads and see the (old-fashioned) farms. Towards the end of the route, you will pass playpond de Zwarte Dennen. In the summer, you can swim in this natural environment or enjoy a picnic.
Start and finish your route at Camping Si-Es-An. Here you can easily park your car and recharge your electric bicycle if necessary.
