Underground hiding place Speulderbos - Ermelo
Close to junction no. 97 you will see a parking lot, on the Sprielderweg road. From here, follow the blue route on the map (see illustrations). Here are the remains of an underground hiding place, with an information board next to it. During the Second World War, from February 1943 to July 1944, this hiding place was used by British pilots and Dutch fugitives, but was discovered by the Germans in 1944. Thirteen men were in hiding at the moment of discovery, who all managed to get away safely using the escape tunnel. Coloured poles indicate the contours of the different parts of the hiding place.
