The IJzeren Man in Vught originated at the end of the 19th century through sand extraction. Using a large steam-powered excavator, nicknamed the “Iron Man”, sand was dug here for the construction of the ’t Zand district in Den Bosch. The large pit that remained gradually filled with groundwater and rainwater, eventually forming the forest lake you see today.
People soon discovered the recreational value of this place. As early as 1916, people were already swimming here, and in 1924 the area was transformed into a modern bathing facility for visitors from the wider region. In 1937, the municipality of Vught took over management and further developed the natural bathing area. Separate and mixed bathing zones were introduced, which was quite progressive for that time.
During the Second World War, Camp Vught was located right next to the IJzeren Man. The lifeguard of the beach facility witnessed what happened there firsthand. In silence, he sometimes tried to help prisoners with small gestures, such as secretly giving them food.
After the war, the IJzeren Man grew into a popular bathing destination, bustling with visitors on sunny days. Over the years, the area evolved from a simple swimming spot into a fully developed recreational area.
Today, you are welcome to swim, enjoy the playground and water attractions, or take a peaceful beach walk in winter.
