The windmill has Zaan region origins. In 1848, oil mill De Oude Haas (built before 1650) was dismantled in Zaandijk and moved to Bovenkarspel. There, it was rebuilt as a combined peeling and grain mill under the name De Haas. In 1908, the mill was acquired by agricultural cooperative Ceres, and the historic name faded from memory. Since then, the mill has been known as ‘Ceres’.
In 1992, demolition of the mill complex began, followed shortly by its restoration.
By mid-1998, Ceres was fully operational again.
