Cycle Route: From Fishermen to Farmers

Medemblik, Enkhuizen, Hoogkarspel
Medemblik received its city rights in 1289 from Floris V, making it the oldest city in West Friesland. In August, the town hosts the West Frisian Water Weeks, full of activities on and around the water, including the food event ‘Culinair aan de kade’. But Enkhuizen also loves good food – you can take a culinary walking tour with a local guide. Hop on the boat to the Zuiderzee Museum or buy some smoked IJsselmeer eel from one of the local fishmongers.
In Hoogkarspel, you’ll pass orchards and farms where fresh fruit and vegetables are sold at roadside stalls. All you need now to complete your meal are some potatoes. Luckily, the route leads you to Opperdoes, home of the famous Opperdoezer Ronde. The village itself feels a bit like a lesser-known version of Giethoorn – here you’ll see barges instead of punts, and far fewer tourists…
Here you can expand your route with pitstops
