Between Geijsteren and the river Maas you will find the remains of Castle Geijsteren. The first mention of this area and the associated rights of the family Van Straelen dates from the year 1251. The castle was therefore built in the 13th century.
After destructions and fires in 1558 and 1919 the castle was restored again and again. But after a bombing raid by the English in 1944, the castle was completely destroyed. The English wanted to prevent the Germans from using the castle again as a look-out point. Years later, the ruins were restored anyway, to make the contours of the castle visible again.
When you enter through the gatehouse, you can see how the castle used to look like, based on photos from the past. On the side you can walk through a gate to the Maas, where you have a fantastic view.
