Natural cycle route past castles
Boxtel, Vught, Haaren
During this cycle route you will ride through the green Brabant landscape between Vught and Boxtel. Dense forests alternate with wide meadows. But nature and greenery are not the only things you will encounter. You will pass by three impressive castles.
You will pass Castle Stapelen in Boxtel. It was probably built somewhere around the 13th century. Around that time it was owned by Willem I van Boxtel, a member of the Randerode family. Since 2018 the castle has been privately owned, but in the 104 years before that it was used as a monastery. You can still walk through the surrounding park and view the impressive castle with its wide moat.
You can also walk in the parks around Castle Nemerlaer and Castle Maurick. The latter, despite what the name suggests, was not built by a Maurick. It was not until more than a hundred years after its construction, in 1421, that the castle was inhabited by Catharina van Maurick. Several families lived there after that. Part of the beautiful castle dates from 1400, but most of it was added in the 19th century.
Besides castle towers you will also pass the Old Tower of Sint-Michielsgestel.
Do you enjoy diving into the history of the region or do you prefer the green surroundings? On this route, you can enjoy both!
