Long and wide in Smallingerland
Drachten, Earnewald, Oudega
Smallingerland is a municipality in Friesland that is wider than it is tall. The municipality owes its name to lake the Smalle Ee or Smalle Eesterzanding. From the main town of Smallingerland, Drachten, you can cycle nicely along this narrow water. At De Veenhoop you cross the water with a ferry and you end up in the beautiful nature reserve De Alde Feanen. A peat bog that has been designated a National Park, and rightly so because it is a unique area with rich flora and fauna. View all the beauty from the different viewpoints you encounter and take your time. On your way back to Drachten you can stop briefly (or a bit longer) in Oudega, which was the capital of Smallingerland long ago. Have you enjoyed this route long enough and do you want to sit and relax on a terrace? Then add Café Tsjoch in Drachten to your cycling route and you are sure to have a nice ending.
