Cycling route Pieterpad (part 9)

length 86.55 km
theme cultural, villages, historical
Kcal 1591
Fiets 5 hours 18 minutes
E-bike 4 hours 14 minutes

Millingen a/d Rijn, Nijmegen

Two friends, Toos and Bertje devised and walked the Pieterpad between 1978 and 1983. A long-distance walking route (500 km) from Pieterburen in northern Groningen to Sint-Pietersberg in southern Limburg in 26 stages that are easily accessible by public transport and where you can stay overnight. The scenery along the way is hugely varied, but equally beautiful everywhere.

Where you can walk, you can also cycle, and we wouldn't be Fietsnetwerk if we didn't set out some great cycling tours for you inspired by the Pieterpad. We made 14 routes totalling almost 1,300 km along all the places on the Pieterpad. We did make circles of them so that you always return to your starting point. This is section 9 and leads from Millingen aan de Rijn to Gennep.

Did you know that the river Rhine does not enter the Netherlands at the town of Lobith? The first point where the Rhine touches the Netherlands is in Spijk. It is only at Millingen aan de Rijn that the river is surrounded by Dutch territory. The locals are just a little proud of that. Beek, mentioned in the same breath as Ubbergen, was proclaimed the greenest village of the Netherlands in 2007. There you will find villa Severen with art nouveau elements. In the Information Centre Dutch Cultural Landscape Foundation, you can see the entire Dutch cultural landscape in eleven miniature gardens, from Texel to South Limburg.

Berg en Dal is, of course, known for its Africa Museum. There are also traces in the village that had belonged to a Roman aqueduct. In Groesbeek, you will find the Liberty Museum and museum Oriëntalis, formerly the Heilige Landstichting. Gennep is a city where you can read history from old buildings. The oldest house dates from the sixteenth century. The Martinuskerk (Martinus Church) was severely damaged during the Second World War. It was decided to restore the tower, from which only the rooster was removed, and to build a new church located at a more central place in the city.
