Cycling route along castles and houses
Wijk bij Duurstede, Driebergen-Rijsenburg, Doorn
Wijk bij Duurstede is an old fortress on the banks of the river Lek. A strategic location, as is evident from the ten castles that Wijk bij Duurstede has within the municipal boundaries: Duurstede, Groenesteyn, Hindersteyn, Leeuwenburg, Lunenburg, Rhijnestein, Sandenburg, Walenburg, Weerdesteyn and Zuilenburg. A beloved city for the nobility, even today: Princess Irene lives in the city for part of the year. Driebergen-Rijsenburg has country estate Sparrenburg, while Doorn castle Moersbergen and Huis Doorn can be found. Huis Doorn is of course known as the last residence of Emperor Wilhelm II. Maarten Maartens, a well-known writer from the nineteenth century, had a small castle built, Zonheuvel. Later it was renamed the Maartenshuis.
