Cycle route Versatile Veluwe
Beekbergen, Hoenderloo, Hoog Buurlo
Sometimes it is the contrasts that make a landscape truly unforgettable. This cycling route across the Veluwe takes you past a sequence of ever-changing natural scenes that continue to surprise. From green Beekbergen, you quickly cycle into the tranquillity of the Veluwe forests. Tall trees surround you while sunlight dances through the dense canopy.
Once in Hoenderloo, you can choose to extend your ride with a loop through the Hoge Veluwe National Park. Entry tickets are required (online or at the entrance). However, you can also simply follow this route to enjoy the varied landscapes of the Veluwe.
Just after Hoenderloo, the landscape opens up. Forests give way to vast heathlands. On the Hoog Buurlose Heide you can enjoy gently rolling purple horizons, especially in late summer when the heather is in bloom.
A little further on, the scenery changes again as drifting sands appear. Here the wind has free rein, constantly reshaping the dunes. In the middle of this rugged landscape stands the impressive “cathedral” of Radio Kootwijk. This monument contrasts with its surroundings, yet blends in beautifully at the same time.
The sheepfold of Hoog Buurlo brings you closer to traditional Veluwe life, while the wildlife observation screen along the Alverschotenseweg offers a chance to spot animals from a sheltered position.
The landscape gradually becomes more wooded again until, via the valley of the Oude Beek, you return to Beekbergen. Your surprisingly varied day full of beautiful natural scenery comes to a close.
