Cycle route through royal Oranjewoud

Heerenveen, Oranjewoud, Wolvega
Oranjewoud, between Wolvega and Heerenveen, is a royal forest. Between the long avenues and stately trees are various former estates, interspersed with small meadows and water features. At the place where former stadholders had a beautiful palace built, there is now the beautiful country estate Oranjewoud. A little further on is the Landgoed Oranjestein, a country estate with a romantic garden. If you are lucky, you can visit the gardens and wander around in the old days. But even from a distance, the estates are beautiful to see.
Oranjewoud is a place where new and old come together, and this becomes clearly visible when you cycle a little past the estates. Between the meadows, a large modern building suddenly appears. The Belvédère Museum, which was opened by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, is a special place where you can admire various exhibitions of modern art.
Continue your cycle route through the hinterland of Heerenveen and enjoy the Frisian nature and culture.
Note: along the way you need to take a bicycle ferry. This self-service ferry normally operates all year round. Since October 2025, however, the ferry has been taken out of service for an indefinite period. As long as the ferry is not running, you can use an alternative route. From junction 27 follow junctions 25-16-12-52 and rejoin the route here towards junction 6. Or the other way around, if you’re cycling the route in the opposite direction.
Here you can expand your route with pitstops
