Cycle route Giethoorn and surroundings

Meppel, Giethoorn, Ruinerwold
This route from Steenwijk focuses on the area around Giethoorn. This idyllic village is world famous for its many bridges, canals and small boats floating in the waterways. Giethoorn is located in the middle of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, a 6,000-hectare nature reserve with water, reeds, swamp forests and meadows. During this route, you will cycle through this water-rich area, where the landscape seems to change constantly.
The route starts in Steenwijk, a town with a rich history and a lively centre. In the 16th century, fierce fighting took place here during the Eighty Years' War, which you can still see in the old city walls and canals. An atmospheric place to start your trip.
Further along the route, you will pass through Meppel. This charming town has a compact centre with nice shops, terraces and canals. Meppel is also one of the starting points of the Drentse Fietsvierdaagse (four-day cycling event), and with good reason, as the landscape outside the town is invitingly open.
A route full of water, history and variety. Ideal for a relaxing day on your bike.
