Cycle route Discover Kaag and the Kagerplassen
Sassenheim, Kaag, Leiden
The island of Kaag is a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts and cyclists because of its location in the Kagerplassen, a beautiful area near Sassenheim. The landscape of this area is typically Dutch, with picturesque views of windmills, polders and grazing cows. In spring, the colorful flower bulbs are an added attraction not to be missed.
If you hop on your bike along the waterfront, there are many opportunities to stop along the way to visit local cheese farmers, windmills and enjoy a delicious lunch by the water. And if you want to explore even more, the lively city of Leiden is just a short distance away. This city is rich in history and has much to offer, from beautiful old buildings to interesting museums and parks where you can enjoy live music.
If you want to shorten your cycling route, there is the possibility of using the Fietspont Kaag during the summer months, which takes you across the Kagerplassen between node 08 and 39. This way you can save about 8 kilometers on your cycling route and still enjoy everything the island of Kaag has to offer.
*Please note: always check in advance whether the ferry is running at the time you are going to cycle there.
