Cycle route around Wijchen
Wijchen, Hernen, Bergharen
If you're up for a casual bike ride with the option to hop off now and then for an interesting sight, this route near the Gelderland town of Wijchen is a great choice.
You’ll cycle past the nature areas of Bergharen and Horssen, where the sprawling green river dunes and woodland edges are home to rich biodiversity. This was once home to the largest badger sett in Western Europe, but due to intensive farming and the arrival of a motocross track, the badger population declined sharply in the late 20th century. Thanks to efforts like planting forests and hedges to support natural values, the badgers have made a comeback — and other animals have also benefitted.
Near Ewijk, you can visit the archaeological site of a Roman Villa. The building once served as a farm and was used to supply food to the soldiers stationed in Nijmegen.
You’ll also pass a few country estates like Leur and Hernen. Enjoy majestic lanes lined with beech and oak trees.
Variety is what makes this route so special. If you want to see even more, just pick a few more stop-off spots from the list we’ve put together for you. In this fascinating region, we also found two windmills, two impressive castles and a kingfisher wall. So pick your favourite stop and hop on your bike!
