Lonneker, Oldenzaal

This route revolves around the Hof Espelo Estate, where you could easily spend the whole day. A varied landscape of hedgerows, streams, springs, photogenic vistas and a rare collection of flora and fauna. The old coach house has been converted into a visitor centre where you can find information. There is a climbing forest, a food forest and you will regularly spot a gnome.

As early as 1215, the Hof Espelo estate was mentioned as being owned by the Catholic Church. It had a powerful influence, as the nearby town of Oldenzaal was the most important religious centre in Twente at the time. Start your cycle tour at 't Hulsorst near Oldenzaal and cycle through the bustling town of Twente, past the Boerskotten and Snippert estates and the Lonnekermolen windmill towards the former Twente air base and finally the Hof van Espelo estate.


Along the way, culture, history and nature alternate at a leisurely pace. Zwerferf Sprakel is a special stop, as are the other estates on the route. Take the time to get off your bike, look around or simply sit down for a while. You can recharge your batteries at one of the cosy terraces along the way before continuing your leisurely cycle ride through the Twente countryside.
