Cycle route along Rijn and IJssel
Huissen, Westervoort, Doesburg
Huissen, already mentioned in 813, is situated on the Nederrijn. The name Westervoort comes from a ford to the west and already appears in a parchment from 726. Doesburg received city rights in 1237. Because of its strategic position on the Oude IJssel and Gelderse IJssel, Doesburg was an important fortified city for a long time. The oldest mention of the village Rheden dates back to the ninth century. A part of the route leads over the Posbank, the edge of a lateral moraine. With a height of 90 metres above sea level, you have a wonderful view of the surroundings, even into Germany if the weather is good.
Stop off at one of the many castles and country estates. We wish you lots of cycling fun!
Tip: near junction 10 you will find Restaurant De Peerdestal with a large car park where you can park for free, ideal for starting your cycle route.
