Zegenwerp Estate was first mentioned in 1306 and was then owned by Oud Herlaer, a place you will encounter later on this route. The lords of Zegenwerp at the time had fishing rights on part of the Dommel river. The name refers to a “zegen”, a fishing net that was used in the past.
In the 15th century, a castle was built on the estate. Today, the English-style main house stands on that spot, surrounded by monumental trees. One of these is an impressive sequoia from 1851, which is no less than 32 metres high.
