This beautiful watermill originally belonged to the Schoneveld estate and lies along the Fertenbach stream, which was dammed to power the mill. Although it’s believed there was already a mill here in the 13th century, the first written record dates from 1748. In 1854, the current milling building was renovated. Milling operations stopped in 1940, and the mill fell into disrepair. Thanks to volunteers from the local Heimatverein Wilsum, the mill was restored from the 1990s onward and is now fully functional again.
The mill features a working overshot waterwheel that powers the grinding mechanism. You can see how grain is milled. Every four weeks, a Saturday tour is held (between 2:30 and 5:00 p.m.), including a live demonstration of the mill at work.
Set idyllically beside the mill pond, this is a perfect place to pause your bike ride and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. On site you can also explore a bakehouse where traditional mill bread is baked, a blacksmith’s forge, an old-fashioned carpentry workshop and a miller’s house from 1893. In the former sawmill barn you’ll now find a museum.
