Cycle route Gardens in the border region
Hardenberg, Emlichheim, Hoogstede
From the peaceful village of Hoogstede Bathorn, you ride straight into the green Dutch-German border region. The route winds through a landscape rich in history and natural beauty, where you’re quickly immersed in stories and hidden gems. In Emlichheim, you’ll come across the Kunstwegen artwork Vom Hören sagen: a mysterious ruin that raises as many questions as it fascinates. Is it art, history or myth? Either way, the setting invites you to hop off and explore.
As you continue pedalling through the open countryside, you’ll pass inviting berry fields where, during the summer, you can pick your own fresh fruit. It’s a fun and tasty break from your bike ride – and a healthy snack to take along.
The route leads you further into the border landscape towards Hardenberg, where the Ada Hofman Pond Gardens form the magical highlight. Surrounded by dozens of ponds, flowering plants and winding paths, this is the perfect place to unwind. A little further on, at junction 40 in Hoogenweg, The Round Table looks like a peaceful resting spot – but appearances deceive. This quiet scene refers to a fierce battle during the Eighty Years' War.
Just beyond lies Wilsum, with its fairytale-like watermill and historic buildings. Here, beside the mill pond, the blacksmith’s forge and the old bakehouse where mill bread is still baked, you’ll taste the atmosphere of times gone by. A beautiful finale to a route full of nature, culture and surprises.
