Utrecht Gate - Naarden

N 52.295465 / E 5.1655649

The Utrecht Gate is the only remaining entrance gate of the Naarden fortress. The original gate was built in 1680 but was replaced in 1877 by the current structure. This gate is richly decorated with the city coat of arms, a statue of the Dutch lion, and images of King William III and his wife Sophie of Württemberg in the turrets.

In 1881, rails for a steam tram were laid through the passage. The Gooische Tram, also known as the "Gooische Moordenaar" (Gooische Murderer), connected Amsterdam with the Gooi region and remained in use until 1939. Nowadays, the passage is only accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.

Since 1994, the Utrecht Gate has been listed as a national monument. You will also find the VVV Naarden visitor center here.
