The Wijmarse Water Mill

The Wijmarse Water Mill - Arcen

N 51.470246 / E 6.182381

One of the most beautiful water mills in northern Limburg was the castle mill of Arcen. Initially, the mill consisted of two floors. In the front part near the north facade was the corn mill; in the back part along the stream the oil mill. At the beginning of the 19th century, an extension with a third floor took place. At the end of the First World War, it fell into disuse. In the autumn of 1944, the mill was an easy target for the British artillery. As a result, the mill was severely damaged. Rain and youth had free play. The roof collapsed, after which dangerous parts were brought down. Since 1978 Limburg Landscape Foundation is the owner of the castle, the estate, and the watermill. In 1980 mill enthusiasts started to renovate the mill building.
Meanwhile, the Water Mill Preservation Foundation Arcen was founded. Together with an architectural firm, a complete restoration plan was drawn up in 1985. The castle was first completed, followed by the watermill. On 27 May 1993, the watermill was put into use as a grinding corn mill again.
