Huis Empe, with its origins in the fourteenth century as property of the Lords of Almelo, has a rich history. After various owners, including the Ten Merssche and Van der Capellen families, the estate came into the Van Buerlo family via inheritance. In the 17th century, it became the property of the Van Hasselts, who managed the estate until 1983. Then the last lord of Huis Empe, Mr Robbert van Hasselt, established the Huis Empe Foundation to preserve the estate.
The foundation made sure Huis Empe did not have to be sold and split the mansion into four houses and the coach house into two. This preserves the heritage of Huis Empe, with legal ownership retained by the foundation and economic ownership for the residents. This ensures that the management of the estate remains unified.
