Saint Christopher's Cathedral - Roermond

N 51.1961416 / E 5.9845155

In 1410, the construction of a new parish church, the current St. Christoffel Cathedral, was started. Originally, the church was built in late Gothic style in the shape of a Greek cross (four equal arms) with a tower. Over the centuries, the church was expanded many times until it reached its present form.

The church has survived many things: a city fire in 1554, the iconoclasm in 1566, looting by soldiers of William of Orange in 1572, the blowing up of the tower by retreating German troops in 1945 and an earthquake in 1992. Not to mention damage from lightning, storms and tower fires. Yet St Christopher still stands there in all its glory.
