Saint Christopher's Cathedral

Saint Christopher's Cathedral - Roermond

N 51.1961416 / E 5.9845155

In 1410, the construction of a new parish church, the current Saint Christopher's Cathedral, began. Originally, the church was built in the late Gothic style in the form of a Greek cross (four equal arms) containing a tower. In the course of the centuries the church was extended many times, until it got its present form. The church has already survived everything: a city fire in 1554, the iconoclasm in 1566, looting by soldiers of William of Orange in 1572, the blowing up of the tower by retreating German troops in 1945 and an earthquake in 1992. Not to mention the damage caused by lightning strikes, storms and tower fires. Yet the Saint Christopher is still there in all its glory.
