The Rijswijkse Bos is a surprising piece of nature right in the city. Once, this was the site of the 17th-century Huis ter Nieuburch, where the Peace of Rijswijk was signed in 1697. The outlines of this palace are visible in the grass through stone bands that mark the former floor plan. In a central spot in the forest stands an obelisk-shaped monument, the memorial needle that commemorates this historic peace agreement. Today, it is a quiet walking area with stately trees, water features and paths where you can catch your breath.
In spring, birds, squirrels, rabbits and foxes nest here, and especially from March to September they need extra peace and quiet. The presence of this biodiversity makes the forest a lively and natural refuge.
Directly next to the forest lies the Teddy Scholten Park, with a pond and benches, and on the edge you’ll find the Rijswijk Theatre. Hop off and discover: there’s much more to experience here than you might think at first glance.
