Rembrandtpark is a large, green and relatively quiet park in Amsterdam West. Unlike Westerpark, which is known for culture and events, or the more compact Erasmuspark with its neighbourhood feel, Rembrandtpark is more of a natural recreational area. It offers open space, nature, sports and calm. The park covers about 45 hectares in total.

For centuries, this area was low lying peat and polder land, mainly used for farming and livestock. Until well into the twentieth century, it lay outside the city.

After World War Two, Amsterdam faced severe housing shortages and rapid population growth. This led to large scale expansions of the city with the development of Amsterdam West and Nieuw West.

Rembrandtpark became part of that expansion. It was designed as a green buffer between the new neighbourhoods and a recreational space for local residents. Construction began in the 1960s and continued into the early 1970s. Just like the park, many nearby streets and neighbourhoods were named after artists. And if you walk through the park, you’ll also spot several sculptures and public artworks.
