Open Air Theatre Hertme - Hertme

N 52.3203757 / E 6.7580441

You might not expect it in such a small village as Hertme in Twente, but there is a real open-air theatre on the edge of the village.

The origin of this open air theatre is closely related to pastor Veeger, who came to live here in 1952. On his initiative, in 1953 the passion plays were performed, in which more than one hundred theatre amateurs took part. It was a great success! When the committee 'Eerste Stichting Twentse Openluchtspelen' was founded a year later, Pastor Veeger decided to offer this part of the church forest, which they used for the passion plays, to the foundation as a theatre location. This is how the Open Air Theatre Hertme came into being.

The construction of the theatre stage is proof of Twente's close-knit community: volunteers came from the village and the surrounding area to build the theatre from the ground up. Not only volunteers, but also the Twente business community are helping out.

The passion plays seem to have become a new tradition, but also for other theatre performances, operas, pop concerts and festivals, this Open Air Theatre in Hertme has proved to be the ideal outdoor venue. Who knows, you might be lucky enough to attend a fantastic performance!
