Since the 14th century the manor has been inhabited by various noble families. When decay threatened in the 20th century, collector Dirk Hannema bought the house and its outbuildings. Since 2004, Museum De Fundatie has continued Hannema's work under the name Kasteel het Nijenhuis. In addition to displaying a part of his extensive collection, the castle and the sculpture garden also host changing exhibitions.
