Nederwaard Mill no. 2 - Kinderdijk
The seventeen mills near Kinderdijk form the largest group of mills in the Netherlands. A few years ago, the World Heritage Committee designated the entire hydraulic engineering monument as a monument of extraordinary universal value and placed it on the World Heritage List. One of the reasons for this international protection is that the whole of the historical high and low polder with natural drainage, watercourses, mills, pumping stations, outlet sluices and common house is still present practically unchanged. In fact, the mills have not changed since their construction.
The windmills of Kinderdijk are one of the top tourist attractions in our country. Every year about 3,000,000 tourists, half of whom are foreigners, visit Kinderdijk. This mill is the only one in the complex that has been opened for visitors during the summer season, the other mills serve as a residence. When the weather is good and there is enough wind, the mill can be seen in operation every day.
