In 1902, the Brothers of Tilburg purchased Huize Steenwijk at Boxtelseweg 58-60 in Vught. The stately house, built in 1840, was converted into a retirement home for elderly and sick brothers. Three monasteries emerged from this location: the Fraterhuis H. Joachim, Huize Emanuelle and the Communiteit Eleousa.
The brothers played an important role in education. They founded schools, taught themselves and developed their own teaching methods. Their efforts extended beyond Brabant. They were also active in education in Suriname. In the 1960s, they were joined by the Sisters of Charity.
Around the 1990s, there were plans to demolish the buildings. Fortunately, these plans were abandoned. Thanks to visionary initiators, the complex was given a new purpose. Today, you will find Kloosterhotel ZIN here, a place where peace, reflection and meditation are central. The brothers still live on the grounds, in the Eleousa Community.
Tip: Take a look at the cemetery. It is a special and peaceful place with a rich history.
