The year 1954 was declared 'Year of the Virgin Mary' by Pope Pius XII. Thereupon a Lourdes grotto was built in the Hellingbos near Simpelveld. The grotto was built after the example of the original grotto in Lourdes. On 10 December 1954, the grotto was consecrated by the bishop of Roermond.
