On the spot where you are now standing was a cemetery in 1944. The liberation of Dorst began with fierce fighting and shellfire.
On Friday 28 October 1944, the 1st Polish Armoured Division totally unexpectedly captured the village of Dorst. After earlier artillery shelling, the Poles surprised the German soldiers in Dorst at eight in the evening who were still busy cooking food. With that, Dorst was liberated for the first time.

But that was not the end of it. The next morning, German troops counterattacked and fighting broke out in four different places in the village. The alarm was raised at Polish headquarters. It was seen there that the planned liberation of Breda was in danger. Sherman tanks were immediately sent to Dorst.

After a fierce battle with losses on both sides, the Polish tanks took out the German artillery and Dorst was captured for the second time.
