At the edge of Scharendijke stands Korenmolen De Lelie, a sturdy round stone windmill from 1868. This characteristic mill is not only a national monument but is still regularly in use thanks to the dedication of enthusiastic volunteer millers. A special feature is the self-adjusting system: a clever technique that allows the sails to automatically respond to the wind.
The mill has a turbulent history. During the North Sea Flood of 1953, it stood over three metres under water and the miller’s house was washed away. Years of decay followed, but luckily De Lelie was fully restored and made operational again in the 1990s.
Until recently, the flour was even used in the pancake house next door, although that is no longer the case. Still, the mill remains a wonderful piece of living heritage. When the sails are turning, you’re welcome to take a look inside, definitely worth it!
