Koeneschans - Vlist

N 51.9717 / E 4.826336

You would almost just pass by it, but the Koeneschans is one of the last visible remnants of the Oude Hollandse Waterlinie. That was the first important defence line of the Netherlands. Even though the French in disaster year 1672 ('the people were unreasonable, lifeless and desperate ...') were quite heavy in our country, they also ensured that the waterline was perfected. The Koeneschans served to defend the high Snake Road to IJsselstein. With the construction of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie almost all forts and ramps have disappeared. The photos were taken by Erfgoedhuis Zuid-Holland.
