Holterberg Nature Museum is one of the oldest nature museums in the Netherlands, founded in 1938 by Piet Bos. The museum is famous for its life-size dioramas: realistic “viewing boxes” in which more than 1,000 European animals can be seen, from songbirds to the only European monkey. These dioramas take you from the Sallandse Heuvelrug to the Wadden Sea, the Veluwe and even the Swiss Alps.
There is plenty to do for children. They can take part in free treasure hunts that lead them criss-cross through the museum. Outside, the Bos van Daantje Das (Daantje Das Forest) awaits, a play forest with exciting tasks, natural play elements and the Groote Kikkerpad (Big Frog Path) for the little ones.
The museum also serves as an information point for the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park and Tourist Rijssen-Holten. Visitors can find walking and cycling routes and tourist information here.
