Where there used to be an impenetrable swamp that protected the city, you will now find Het Bossche Broek. This old marsh valley was an important defensive structure in the Middle Ages. Today, it is a vast nature reserve covering 116 hectares where you can walk, cycle and run.
Het Bossche Broek is located right next to the historic city centre of 's-Hertogenbosch. You can easily walk there from the centre. The area is one of the lowest-lying places in North Brabant. That is precisely why the city was built here, on a high sand ridge surrounded by wet grounds that kept the enemy at bay.
Today, Het Bossche Broek is a paradise for nature lovers. You will find rare plants such as cotton grass and marsh marigold. Cows graze in the green pastures along the city walls.
You can also explore Het Bossche Broek by boat. The Hertogboeren offer various packages, such as sailing on the Dommel in an electric boat or an early morning nature cruise with a guide from IVN. There is also a tour that takes you to the city by water and then on foot to visit St. John's Cathedral.
