Fort Maarsseveen was built in 1880 - 1881 as part of the second ring of forts around the city of Utrecht. The fort had to defend the Maarsseveense Vaart against enemies from the east. With the invention of the aeroplane, the fort lost its function. If you want to know what it was like in the old days, you can take the virtual tour.
Besides being a historical site, Fort Maarsseveen is also a cultural and artistic breeding ground and meeting place.
