Ellen Hoffmann was a Jewish inhabitant of Gennep who was arrested during the Second World War and deported to Auschwitz. She probably died during an evacuation trip to Bergen Belsen. Ellen's husband and daughter survived the war.

In 2001, artist Frans Smeets created this mosaic square together with his daughter Isabelle and 280 inhabitants of Gennep. In several (half) circles, one of which is in a stream, various images have been mosaicked. The square represents all victims of war and violence. By naming the square 'Ellen Hoffmann', the hope for a world with peace and security is emphasised.
