Ellen Hoffmannsquare - Gennep

N 51.701667 / E 5.968056

Ellen Hoffmann was a Jewish resident of Gennep who died during the Second World War. In 2001, artist Frans Smeets, together with his daughter and 280 inhabitants of Gennep, created this mosaic square. The square stands for all victims of war and violence. By calling the square 'Ellen Hoffmann', hope is emphasized as a world of peace and security. How did Ellen eventually die? We don't know. It is very likely that she died in a concentration camp.
