It is a beautiful area to cycle through around Castle Nederhemert. The impressive castle is managed by Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen and can only be visited during the Open Monument Day. However, the green Castle Avenue that runs past the castle already makes it well worth cycling by and catching a glimpse of the imposing building.
Like most castles, this one also has an impressive history. The oldest parts date back to the early fourteenth century, when a defensible residential tower was built. This tower had a cellar and two floors connected by stairways built into the walls. Later, an ensemble of several towers was constructed around a walled courtyard, including a rectangular tower on the north-east corner and a round tower on the north-west corner. The hexagonal tower that was added in the fifteenth century was unfortunately lost in 1945.
The castle is surrounded by a moat, which is a remnant of a sixteenth-century defensive structure. Over the centuries Nederhemert was repeatedly rebuilt and inhabited by different families. A fire in 1945 destroyed a large part of the interior, including the famous bed of the Gelderland field marshal Maarten van Rossem. A room with eighteenth-century painted linen wallpaper with Eastern motifs was also heavily damaged. Today, life-size portraits of seventeenth-century residents decorate this room.
