Cycle route A remarkable loop around the Maas
's-Hertogenbosch, Heusden, Ammerzoden
The region around the Maas truly has a rich history. As early as the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, redoubts and forts were built here to defend the borders, among others during the Eighty Years’ War. The old fortifications, part of the Zuider Waterlinie, together with redoubts and noble castles in this area still remind visitors of these turbulent times. A good example is Fort Crèvecoeur, strategically located at the mouth of the Dieze where it flows into the Maas. This fort played an important role in protecting ’s-Hertogenbosch.
The remains of Fort Crèvecoeur and other traces of this eventful past are still clearly visible in the landscape. Together with the modern castles of Haverleij and a park with exotic animals, they form a remarkable collection of sights. You cycle past tranquil floodplains, modern and historic castles and green parks, surrounded by a landscape full of centuries-old stories. Take the fortified town of Heusden for example: you can choose to enter the town and explore all its special features, but this route leads you around it instead, offering wide views of the impressive ramparts, the greenery and the water.
This loop therefore becomes a wonderful mix of peace, space and nature in what was once a very turbulent area. Letting your mind wander a little is simply part of the experience.
