Located in the characteristic Dutch river landscape of the Maas and the Waal, the impressive Castle Ammersoyen still stands today. This sturdy castle with its outbuildings lies at the centre of a double moat. Together these elements form a beautiful and harmonious whole. Inside the historically furnished castle, the Middle Ages truly come to life.
Castle Ammersoyen was built around 1300, based on a castle type introduced by Count Floris V. The towers stand outside the central building, making the castle easier to defend. Ammersoyen is one of the best-preserved water castles in the Netherlands. During the restoration in the previous century, the moat was excavated and many discoveries were made.
The moat turned out to be an archaeological treasure trove of pottery, glass, silver, tin and bronze. These objects, some of which are displayed in the castle, give visitors a clear impression of 600 years of castle history. The collection is extensive and cohesive, making it the most remarkable collection of moat finds in the Netherlands.
