In 1854 the young architect Petrus Josephus Hubertus Cuypers (1827-1921) built the neo-Gothic castle Aerwinkel. A castle with pointed arches, arrow towers, pilasters and battlements in a landscape park that was built in the same period, with the house as its centre and possibly also by Cuypers. The estate is situated along the steep edge of the Vlootbeek valley, cut into the low terraces of the Meuse. This landscape is the basis for the name, because 'shops' are protruding terrace remnants in the wet brook valleys. Recently, the landscaped rhododendron garden was restored, a garden restoration in the style of 1850, with plant species from that time and supplemented with plants that fit in with that image of the time.
