On the edge of the De Geelders nature reserve lies a special place of tranquillity: the Kartuizer Poosplaats. This place commemorates the Carthusian monks who settled in the Dommel Valley near Olland in 1466. Thanks to donations of land and goods, they were able to build a small monastery here, with five cells, gardens and a chapel.
The Carthusians lived in seclusion. They only spoke to each other on Sundays and public holidays and otherwise lived in silence, devotion and prayer. Their stay was short-lived. After only a year, they moved on to Den Dungen, Vught and eventually Antwerp.
However, their traces have not disappeared. The resting place consists of a bench, an information board and a boulder with a text that evokes the spirit of their lives. Elsewhere in Olland, you can also find references to their presence, such as a work of art and special paving stones.
