“Vom Hören sagen” is an art installation by artists Suchan Kinoshita and Hasje Boeyen, created in 2000, and part of the open-air art route Kunstwegen in the Grafschaft Bentheim region.
The title “Vom Hören sagen” is a wordplay. Literally “by hearsay”, referring to something uncertain. A story you’ve heard, but with elusive details. The artists searched for a forgotten history: the story of a couple who came to live by the canal in the 1950s, lived outside the village for a few years, and then disappeared again. What remained were only traces: a ruin of a double house, remnants of a garden, a bench by the canal.
With this installation, the theme of lost stories, memory, and the boundary between fact and myth is made visible. It invites you to search for meaning in ruins and fragments, and to realise that not everything fits neatly into written history: “Could it also be myth?” is a central question in the work.
