Arboretum De Dreijen, part of Wageningen University and managed by the Utopa Foundation, was established in 1895 at the initiative of the National Agricultural School. Landscape architect Leonard Springer designed the layout in English landscape style, with winding paths, rock gardens, ponds, borders and a pinetum (conifer garden).
Some trees from Springer’s early period are still present, such as the giant sequoia, and the pinetum was expanded in 2013. The garden also contains national plant collections such as peonies, hostas and wisteria.
De Dreijen is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 and entry is free. Walk along the avenues or join guided tours led by experienced gardeners, many of whom have been involved with the garden for decades.
In addition to plants, there is also attention for education, art and experience. Birds, insects and other wildlife can be found here, and the sculpture gallery Het Depot is located nearby.
