Botanical cycle route around Wageningen
Wageningen, Renkum, Hemmen
Get ready for a green discovery tour. Between Wageningen, Renkum and Hemmen, you cycle from one remarkable arboretum to another. For example, Belmonte, one of the largest in the Netherlands and the largest on this route. Here you can enjoy panoramic views over the Nederrijn and the Betuwe while walking through collections of roses, camellias and rhododendrons.
Not much further, you will find two gardens located directly opposite each other. Arboretum De Dreijen takes you through a rich botanical history with its English landscape style and an impressive giant sequoia. Cross the road to the park-like Arboretum Hinkeloord, centred around a 19th-century villa, and see how art and nature complement each other.
After cycling through the forests of the southern Veluwe, you arrive at Arboretum Oostereng. This is a wilder, more natural forest where biodiversity takes centre stage, with more than 700 species of trees and shrubs and a butterfly garden.
From there, it is a short ride to the Renkum Stream Valley, where winding streams, flower-rich hay meadows and scenic views lead you to the Nederrijn. The Renkum ferry takes you to the river floodplains. As a final highlight, you cycle past the castle gardens of Hemmen. End your route at this fairy-tale-like place with old avenues, orchards and colourful flower borders.
