Fort Benoorden Spaarndam was built between 1885 and 1901. The fort belongs to the western front of the Stelling van Amsterdam.
The first earthworks, also called embankments, were constructed between 1885 and 1887. This took place at the same time as the earthworks for Fort Bezuiden Spaarndam. After that it took another ten years before the construction of the bombproof buildings began. In 1901 the fort was fully completed.
Around the fort lies a wide water filled moat. This moat is clearly visible and is part of the design of the fort. The fort was eventually built smaller than originally planned. The outer edges of the moat still show the original shape of the fort.
At the front of the fort two positions for cannons were planned. These gun emplacements were ultimately not built.
